Paul Whibley's Sparta Race Report (2006)
Race Report:
Kentucky Off Road Hare Scrambles Series (KORHS) - Round 8
Rider: Paul Whibley - Bike Overall Winner
Team: Moose, Parts Unlimited, Honda
Bike: Honda CRF 450
The latest round of the Kentucky hare scramble series was held over the
weekend at Sparta, Kentucky. The same venue that held a round of
the GNCC series earlier in the year. The GNCC was a mud fest but
the Kentucky series
was blessed with near perfect weather. The day dawned cool but clear.
A good frost lay on the ground. After the tough junior riders had
knocked the frost off and the sun had
warmed the air, the afternoon race was set to go.
I got a good start and holeshot, leading the way into the woods.
The course was 8 miles long and was a mix of fresh tracks and used
trail from the GNCC. I paced myself on the 1st lap and learned the
track, not wanting
to take any risks.
Marty Michels was riding well and stayed close on the 1st lap. On
the 2nd lap, as I began to learn the track I picked up the pace and
began to build a lead. After the gas stop I was comfortable with
the track and picked up
the pace again. Marty was riding well and continued to keep me honest.
Katherine and Scott gave me some motivational pitboard signals, saying
Marty was close (closer than he really was) forcing me to pick up
the pace again.
By the end of the race I had built a comfortable lead. I was impressed
by Martys pace and I thought he rode a great race.
My team mate Ryan Mullins also had a sweet ride, winning the Light
A class on his Honda CRFX 250.
