Marty Michels' Clay City (MPOR) Race Report (2006)

Race Report: Kentucky Off Road Hare Scrambles Series (KORHS) - Round 8
Rider: Marty Michels - Bike 1st Place
Bike: 06 KTM 450 #34

If you have ridden or raced at Clay City before you kind of know what to expect. A track with rocks, some hills (big and small), creek beds that are ridiculously slick, and fast rough trails. Well, for everyone that raced the latest round of the KY. Hare Scrambles Series that is exactly what you got along with quite a bit of dust.

I had been looking forward to racing all week leading up to the Clay City event because I really enjoy riding at the MPOR facility, due to the fact that it has a very wide variety of terrain and a great place to get some good seat time on the 450 Katoom. My day started out fairly well, maneuvering my big thumper into second behind Jake Young as we entered the woods. I was content riding with Jake because he is a good rider and goes really well, plus I really don't like leading the first lap anyway. I got around Jake going up a long hill about halfway around the first lap, which was a welcome relief after eating his dust for along time!

After I got around Jake and I just rode my own race, trying to log some consistent laps and pick good flowing lines over the rocks, and roots that littered the course, all while trying to stay out of everyone else's dust. Other than that I had a fairly uneventful day. I was just another guy (oops, sorry ladies) out there ripping around the Eastern KY. mountains with a big smile on my face!

Sorry, that this might seem a little short and boring, but I am doing this in between changing tires and studying.

Thanks to the great people at MPOR and the KY. H.S. Series for putting on another fun and challenging event, also the people and companies that support my racing ambitions.
