Nate Alering's Saddleback Race Report (2007)

Race Report: Kentucky Off Road Hare Scrambles Series (KORHS) - Round 7
Rider: Nate Alering - 2nd Heavy A - 3rd Overall
Bike: MSR YZ250 2-Smoker

Round eight of the series was held at Saddleback under ideal conditions (110 degree heat index and no rain for weeks). The race still drew a large crowd. I give props to everyone that raced in the heat rather than stay home in the air conditioning. As I looked around I knew I had my work cut out. To the left was Marty Michels, to the right was Brian Garrahan and Andy Shea. On the second row was John Maschino (the fastest farmer I know). I felt up to the challenge though since I just returned from riding in Colorado. If anyone has a chance to go ride in Colorado they should do it.

With the dust I knew the start would be important so I put the hammer down on my Lexington Motorsports, MSR YZ250 2-smoker, smoked the holeshot and was gone (keepin the 2-stroke alive). I looked back in like the third field and could see no one. Checked out. I was on the g’zas.

About the 7 mile mark I came over a hill and was on the gas going down it 3rd gear whicked when I realized halfway down it turned 90 degrees to the right. I locked up my brakes and realized I wasn’t makin the turn. Past the turn was some logs and rocks so I got back on the gas, wheelied the obstacles but still went over the bars down the hill. I got up took off then stopped to straighten levers and such. I took off and still had the lead. I was the first one to pop out of the woods so that was cool. I probably had about 25 seconds on everyone before I crashed. Brian caught up after I crashed and I was keeping him behind me. About 1 mile from the end of the first lap I overshot another 90 degree turn giving him the lead and the $100 fast lap. Dope. I came in right behind Brian the first lap and I could see he had a rear flat. This made me think I might have a chance. I passed him back on lap two and was leading. He got me back and I rode with him till I got gas then never saw him again but at that point I was wondering if you could cook an egg on my head I was so hot.

Then on lap four John Maschino (aka the farmer) caught me. I tried to race with him but he was “haulin the mail” and I was done. I started getting cold chills and doing stupid things so I cruised the rest of the race and ended up 2nd in class behind Brian (who rode the whole race with a flat) and third overall. I will take getting beat by John and Brian though since they are some bad dudes. I’ll see everyone at Big Hill. Hopefully we’ll get some rain. Dirtbikes are COOL. Later.
